Leather Worth Learning About: Why LWG Certification Matters

Not all leather is created equal, and for the traveler who cares as much about how something is made as how it looks; that distinction is essential.

DELSEY’s sustainably sourced leather bags and accessories are crafted from hides exclusively handled in Gold-certified tanneries - a distinction that represents the highest standard of responsible leather production in the world.

Behind that certification is a rigorous, independent audit covering everything from environmental impact to worker and animal welfare. DELSEY leather means you can feel good carrying it.

When Exceptional Standards Align

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a global not-for-profit organization with one purpose: to ensure that leather, one of the world’s oldest and most enduring materials, is produced in a way that protects people and the planet. The LWG audit standard, first established in 2005, is now used to assess more than a third of the world’s finished leather production. It’s recognized by the most discerning brands on earth, including DELSEY.

DELSEY leather is produced by Mother Impex, a Gold-rated LWG member tannery based in Ranipet, a town in Tamil Nadu, South India with a centuries-long tradition of leather craftsmanship. A fourth-generation family operation, Mother Impex brings decades of inherited expertise to every hide they process, and the Gold-level standards to match.

Earning LWG Gold, the highest tier, isn’t a formality. Tanneries are assessed across 17 rigorous sections spanning energy and water consumption, chemical safety, waste and emissions management, full supply chain traceability, and independent social auditing of working conditions. Certification is awarded at three levels (Bronze, Silver, and Gold), with Gold representing the top tier of ethical and environmental performance.

What It Means, In Practice

When leather carries LWG certification, it means the tannery producing it has been independently verified to operate with transparency and accountability at every stage of production.

It means:

  • Water used in processing is treated before release

  • Chemicals meet strict hazard controls and restricted substance standards

  • Workers are protected by independently audited labor conditions

  • Raw materials are traceable back through the supply chain

In DELSEY’s case, that trail leads to pastures in the UK, France and Ireland, where 100% of Mother Impex’s raw hides originate. From there, four generations of in-house craftsmanship shape them into the leather than defines our bags. Mother Impex’s Gold-certified leather tannery status places them among the most rigorously vetted leather producers in the world - a standard DELSEY holds as a non-negotiable.

Why It Matters for Travel

A leather travel bag is a long-term companion. It goes where you go, across continents, through seasons, over decades. That kind of longevity demands more than beautiful grain and fine stitching, but a material produced with the same care and intention as you put into choosing it.

DELSEY’s commitment to verified, responsibly produced leather is a deliberate choice. Real leather, designed with intention, is one of the most durable and timeless materials available. It doesn’t crack, fade into irrelevance, or lose its edge after two seasons.

LWG certification is how we prove it’s been earned, even before it becomes an essential part of your life.
